Be Prepared for Hurricane Season

The 2025 Atlantic hurricane season began June 1 and continues through November 30. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has predicted a 60% chance of an above-normal season this year. The complete forecast is available on the NOAA website.

When hurricanes or other emergency situations happen, Florida’s courts strive to remain open to ensure access to justice while also working to protect the health and safety of court users, judges, and staff. To achieve these goals, Florida’s courts have emergency preparedness plans in place to ensure that courts continue to serve the needs of the public with as little disruption as possible.

When courts are forced to close due to severe weather or other emergencies, the Florida Supreme Court website is the source for official information. It publishes a comprehensive list of court closures across the state, including the specific counties and circuits affected, the dates they were closed, and their projected reopening dates. The website also provides notice of any orders issued by the chief justice that extend legal deadlines in affected areas, which ensures that anyone who missed a filing deadline or court date due to the emergency is protected without needing to file motions for extensions. Please note that orders extending deadlines are always issued after courts have reopened and are retroactive to the dates of actual closure.

Many courts also share important notices and updates on their social media channels. Be prepared for future events by following the social media channels of the Florida Supreme Court, the Office of the State Courts Administrator, and local courts. A list of social media channels used by Florida’s courts is available on the Florida Courts website.

With the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season just beginning, this is an ideal time to review emergency plans and get prepared for what may come.
